The sandwich, as we know it today, was popularized by John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, in the 18th century. The story goes that Montagu, an avid gambler, wanted a meal that he could eat without leaving the gaming table. He asked his servant to bring him some meat tucked between two slices of bread, allowing him to eat with one hand and continue playing with the other.
This convenient and portable meal quickly caught on among his peers, who began ordering “the same as Sandwich.” Thus, the sandwich was born. While variations of bread and meat combinations existed long before Montagu, his request popularized the concept and gave it a name.
The sandwich has since evolved into a global culinary staple, with countless variations and styles. From the classic ham and cheese to elaborate creations like the club sandwich or the Vietnamese bánh mì, the sandwich remains a versatile and beloved food item worldwide.
